A SUPER IMMUNE TONIC

Astragalus is a staple herb from Traditional Chinese medicine where its name translates as ‘yellow leader’ because high quality astragalus roots have a deep yellow colour.

It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in Chinese medicine and in a Chinese medical text called Da Ming Ri Hua Ben Cao, it was traditionally used for wasting or ‘exhausting’ diseases and for treating asthma, flu, respiratory disorders, deafness due to kidney yin, diseases with chills, lack of appetite, fevers, coughing with phlegm and strengthening the tendons, bones and muscles.

It is excellent for people under immunological stress (from chemotherapy, sleep deprivation, post-acute infection, fatigue, surgery and travelling) and for those deficient in Qi (lack of vital energy). In fact, in Chinese Medicine, astragalus is used as an energy tonic, often in place of ginseng, and as a long – term aid in strengthening Wei Qi (‘defensive energy’), or in Western terms, both specific and nonspecific immunity, particularly in the spleen and the lungs. It is therefore a top ally for colds and upper respiratory infections.

Astragalus root contains a long list of complicated phytochemicals that have been clinically shown to stimulate the growth of isolated human lymphocytes and boost immunological responses. It has repeatedly shown an ability to enhance NK cells (a type of white blood cell that can kill tumour cells or cells infected with a virus) and induce interferon production (produced as a defence to viruses).

It is one of the main herbs used in Fu Zheng therapy (a herbal formula made up of adaptogens, tonics and organ – system protectors that is used to enhance the immune system for chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment).

Astragalus has shown no toxicity with long term use but it should be discontinued when experiencing excess heat in the body ( symptoms of fever, dry cough or constipation) as it is a warming herb .
